Race Report – IM Copenhagen 2022

Race Report – IM Copenhagen 2022

Finally we broke free of the city and onto the coastal road up the Oresund. What a course. We were flying north, with the Baltic to our sparkling like a million crystals. Silky smooth asphalt, the sun shining down on us. Seagulls cruising along, staring at us weird freaks in lycra and with stupid helmets.

Race Report IM 70.3 Slovenia

Race Report IM 70.3 Slovenia

Around July I lost confidence that I would be able to travel to the US for the 70.3 WC in St George and quietly began looking for a consolation race and so I began searching Ironman.com for half distance events that weren’t already booked, preferably on the same weekend as St George and within reasonable driving distance. I ended up with 70.3 Slovenia.

I’m going to the Ironman 70.3 World Championships

I’m going to the Ironman 70.3 World Championships

In February I passed on the opportunity to take a slot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Back then the pandemic had not yet stopped the world in its tracks and the race was scheduled for November 29th 2020 in New Zealand. A friend who traveled with me took his slot, I didn’t because the race would have coincided with my wives‘ birthday. No way, Jose! At the time it was the obvious and easy decision. The following days however…

Race Report Ironman 70.3 Gdynia

Race Report Ironman 70.3 Gdynia

2020 has been a tricky year to race for the triathlon community. I didn’t know it when I planned my season at the end of last year, but by accident I picked one of the last races before events got COVIDed and one of the first to resume the half distance calendar. 70.3 Gdynia at the Polish Baltic coast was originally scheduled for August 5th, but was pushed to September 6th. The organizers put together a race concept that accounted…

Race Report IRONMAN 70.3 Oman

Race Report IRONMAN 70.3 Oman

It is Monday after the race. Sitting at my breakfast table, still stoked about the greatest race of my triathlon life so far. It was an emotional week, crowned by myself surpassing all my athletic expectations. But let’s start at the beginning. Going to Muscat in 2009 10 years ago I spent a semester abroad at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat. Until then I’ve never been on an airplane or travelled outside the German speaking world. The decision to go…

70.3 Oman – Preparation Review

70.3 Oman – Preparation Review

The Time Has Come And here I am sitting on my couch, thinking what went wrong. And what went right. I’ve completed 4 months of dedicated training with the explicit goal of racing my best 70.3 yet, knocking on the door of my age groups top ten in an international field and have some hope at a 70.3 worlds qualification. I’ve worked harder than ever before, more than ever before. The proverbial hay os now in the proverbial barn. So…

Race Report Harzer Gebirgslauf (Brockenmarathon)

Race Report Harzer Gebirgslauf (Brockenmarathon)

After the terribly botched marathon in April I was brave enough to sign up for another long one in autumn. The Harz Gebirgslauf leads athletes from thr valey up to the top of Mt Brocken in northern Germany. It is regarded as one of the hardest marathons around here with 1200 meters climbing. To my surprise it is also one of the oldest trail marathons going into its 42nd year. We signed up together with 6 guys. I’ve always considered…

Race Report Mont Blanc Man

Race Report Mont Blanc Man

And there it was, my race highlight of this year. It felt weird somehow to wait so long before racing again, but the Mont Blanc Man was my first triathlon since Ironman Hamburg last year. Needless to say I should have been nervous. But I wasn’t. I was really relaxed and happy. Mostly I was grateful that I made it to the start line fit and healthy and that I had the privilege of traveling and racing such a beautiful…

Race Report: Cycle Tour 2018 (100k Road Race)

Race Report: Cycle Tour 2018 (100k Road Race)

‚Tis the time of year when I randomly sign up for events. As long as I don’t have a new goal I feel lost. I can’t really sit still, but can’t really commit to much either. The result is that whenever someone asks me to join for a local event my default answer is „sure“. The Cycle Tour is such an event. A 100k rolling road race that targets mostly recreational riders. There is a timed race going on, but…

Ironman Hamburg 2018

Ironman Hamburg 2018

Finally the big day has come! Not entirely as expected though. On our way to Hamburg the news hit that the swim would be canceled due to high concentrations of blue and green algae and be replaced by a 6k warm up run. Bit of a bummer that my first ever long distance triathlon would not be an actual triathlon. But we were already on our way, had put in the work and nothing better to this weekend and so…
